“If I cannot be better than them, I will become so much worse.”

📖book review after rlly long, yay.

Read it about 3 months back but still not over it. The Folk of the Air was a YA fantasy trilogy — definitely a slow burn but easily one the Top 3 I’ve ever read from the genre.

The best part about this series in comparison to other YA fantasy was how the female and male leads (Jude and Cardan), who were the protagonists sure, weren’t painted as a 100% dreamy hero/heroin version. It was an enemies-to-lovers trope but minus the sugar coat. The author really went with keeping her character real, raw, broken, human but beautiful AND dynamic. I think this series was so special to me because Jude was everything, I or any resilient girl has ever dreamt of growing into.

This series was EVERYTHING you require from a good book series. Twists after twists & reveals after reveals. Enemies to lovers? An empowered, resilient, ruthless female lead with an equally bold, heart-of-gold, witty male lead?

Also @blackholly’s writing styles are one of the best I’ve ever read — almost lyrical and poetic, man:

“Because you’re like a story that hasn’t happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.”

“By you I’m forever undone.”

“By you I’m forever undone.”

“He looks at me like we share secrets although we don’t. We don’t share anything.”

“That’s what comes from hungering for something; you forget to check if it’s rotten before you gobble it down.”

I’ll go as far as saying my top 3 YA Fantasy are, Infernal Devices > ACOTAR > TFOTA & maybe the male lead in this series, Cardan ranked over Rhysand and after Will Herondale. 🤭 (I know what I said)
